How many times have you been told…

– that your art isn’t “necessary”,

– that it’s just a hobby and you should treat it like one,

– that you’re “a little bit off”,

– that you should be more “normal”,

– that you should consider getting a real job?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve grown tired of hearing stuff like that. If you’re an artist, you’re the way you are because you were BORN that way. “Artist” isn’t a job. It’s not something you learn in a school. It’s not something you become. It’s not what you do. It’s a singular way of being in the world. It’s WHO YOU ARE.

Photography, video and imaging fair | photokina – CANCELLED

After intensive consultation, Koelnmesse GmbH has decided to cancel Photokina 2020, originally planned to be held 27 to 30 May 2020.

The next installment of the leading international trade fair for photography, video and imaging will be presented from 18 to 21 May 2022. The Imaging Innovation Conference will not be celebrating its première in 2020 as originally planned; a new date will be coordinated.

Galerie 10a brengt met Bieke Depoorter, Titus Simoens en Lara Gasparotto drie topfotografen in een unieke combinatie.

In deze expo gaat het niet alleen over het afgebeelde, maar ook over de rol en de positie van de makers. Zo toont Magnumfotografe Bieke Depoorter foto’s uit de reeks Agata, een project over een ontmoeting met een buitengewone Parisienne. Bieke Depoorter speelt hier met de leugen en het rollenspel van de representatie. Ze wil de mensen die ze fotografeert eerst als persoon benaderen en dan pas als fotografe. Depoorter stelt haar positie als fotografe meer en meer in vraag en dit zie je in haar overzichtsexpo die te zien was in het FOMU Antwerpen en nu doorheen grote Europese musea reist.

As if 2020 didn’t already have enough futuristic connotations, CES 2020 is now upon us. The first technology trade show of 2020 will take place in Las Vegas next week, from 07-10 January, and should have some incredible innovations in store for cameraphiles.

CES 2020 – or the Consumer Electronics Show, to give its full and former name – is the annual technology supershow where the biggest names in the electronics industry unveil their latest cutting-edge products. It’s the place where major new products are shown for the first time, and has increasingly become an important date on the calendar for the photographic industry.

The event made its debut in 1967 with both summer and winter shows, but since 1998 it has exclusively been a once-a-year winter wonderland for the latest tech, welcoming over 175,000 visitors last year.

It has been another great year for books about photography. Here are our top picks, which are available to buy right now.

From much-needed retrospectives of the work of feted photographers to impressive and thorough overviews of specialist photographic genres, and more besides, some compelling new photography books have been published this year.

We may be deeply immersed in the digital age, but there really is no substitute for the enjoyment to be had from devouring a book of photographs, especially when they are lovingly reproduced on quality paper and accompanied by informative and inspirational text.

The titles that have made our pick of 2019’s books on photography all fall into that bracket. So whether you’re a fan of astrophotography, landscapes or street photography, or perhaps the world’s most iconic camera brand, you’ll find something of interest in the following selection…
